On December 15, 1936, a committee from the Saranac Ladies’ Literary Club and the Saranac Woman’s Club, joined by representatives from the Village Board, Businessmen’s Association, Ministerial group, and School Faculty, began planning a public library for their town with no funds. The Works Progress Administration agreed to cover the librarian’s salary if utilities were provided, which the Village Board agreed to. The library opened in 1937. In 1946, Miss Lua Crawford donated a building in memory of her parents for the library.
In 1991, Chip Livingston and Clarksville businessmen established the Clarksville Area Library, supported by the Village of Clarksville. This library, along with the Saranac branch, serves over 10,100 people across several townships.
Significant updates included the purchase and renovation of an adjacent building in 2013 for tech and meetings, and a new Clarksville building in 2017. Recently, an addition was made to the Saranac branch to include a community room and new circulation desk.
